Film preservation is evolving. Traditional digitization methods lock color film into a single color space, such as Rec. 709 or BT. 2020, often requiring costly film-outs to safeguard content against format obsolescence. But what if your film assets could be preserved in a truly futureproof way—unconstrained by current digital video standards?
Enter Scan2Screen, an innovative multispectral digitization workflow that introduces a paradigm shift to digital film preservation.
Beyond Traditional Digital Preservation
Unlike conventional methods, Scan2Screen’s advanced multispectral workflow captures film in a fully calibrated and scientifically accurate digital, high-fidelity digital format that remains adaptable to future color spaces, display technologies, and restoration workflows. Your assets are preserved at the highest possible quality—ready for whatever comes next in digital cinema.
Unrivaled Image and Metadata Components
The Scan2Screen preservation package includes up to 14 monochrome images per frame, delivering unmatched color fidelity and preservation capabilities:
- Diffuse Lighting Set – Captures six spectral bands plus an infrared image, minimizing scratches and dirt.
- Directed Lighting Set – Uses collimated illumination to enhance local contrast, texture, and surface details.
- Each image stack is accompanied by detailed metadata, including:
- ✅ Spectral band measurements
- ✅ Scanner characteristics
- ✅ Calibration data
- ✅ Flat fields
- ✅ Film and archival IDs
The meticulous documentation ensures your film can be re-rendered and mapped to meet any current or future playback, restoration, or display needs.

Each folder contains the monochrome
captures in either TIFF or DPX.
Additionally, Scan2Screen’s monochrome image stacks are compatible with the FFV1/MKV losslessly compressed file format popularized by RAWCooked and ffmpeg workflows. We have been able to achieve as much as a 1.4:1 compression ratio when transcoding the monochrome image sequences to FFV1/MKV.
How Scan2Screen Outperforms Film-Outs
While traditional film-outs offer a physical backup, they come with significant limitations—from color reproduction issues to high costs. Scan2Screen offers a superior alternative:
✅ Unparalleled Color Preservation – Multispectral imaging captures a wider and more accurate color range, unlike scanners optimized for chromogenic film, which struggle with faded or historical colors
✅ Minimal Reliance on Film-Outs – A fully digital preservation package minimizes the need for expensive and restrictive film printing.
✅ Superior Film Reconstruction – If a film-out is ever required, Scan2Screen’s high-fidelity monochrome sequences ensure precise reprinting and future re-digitization.
