Embracing Authentic Film Colors, Powered by Science

Unlock the Full Spectrum: the Power of a Versatile Film Scanner

Between 2013 and 2018, we investigated eight leading commercial film scanners, including industry giants like ARRISCAN, Scanity, and Lasergraphics Director. Curious to learn more about this study? Download our full report here.

The Bottom Line?

No scanner could accurately handle all historical film color stocks. Each had its strengths and limitations, whether due to their spectral properties or mechanical design.

The Major Drawback?

The traditional scanners we studied came with a major limitation: they are hardwired. This means users are restricted to the options a specific scanner is built for.

Traditional professional scanners are hardwired with illumination units consisting of three to four narrow spectral bands,
thereby potentially missing important color information
(such as the blue-green tinting depicted with the colored line at 620 nm).

The Solution?

If you need to scan a variety of color films, you need a versatile film scanner that adapts to the material requirements of your various specific projects. Enter Scan2Screen’s versatile, multispectral scanner! With its advanced multispectral illumination unit, Scan2Screen captures the full range of colors.

Scan2Screen’s customized multispectral illumination unit consists of six spectral bands in the visible spectrum plus an infrared channel.
It is fully versatile and can be extended by additional spectral bands.

Why This Matters

Current digital devices often miss color information of historical films with their unique dyes and pigments. By capturing all the historical film colors, we future-proof the digitization for technologies with ultra-wide gamuts.

Versatility Meets Precision

Scan2Screen is built to handle any challenge. It adapts to a wide range of material conditions, including different gauges, shrinkage, and brittleness. With interchangeable components – camera, lens, illumination – you get the most precise scan possible. Our scanner also offers diffuse/collimated illumination, corresponding to the optical path of projection lights used in cinemas.
