Embracing Authentic Film Colors, Powered by Science

No Color Grading? No Color Grading!

Did you know that with Scan2Screen’s multispectral workflow, you typically don’t need color grading?

Why Is That?

Scan2Screen’s multispectral scanner captures six spectral bands across the visible spectrum. This advanced scanning technology produces a full representation of the spectral characteristics of the color film, unlike most conventional film scanners that only use three narrow bands.

How It Works

In Scan2Screen’s multispectral workflow, each frame of the film is stored in a stack of monochrome images preserving a wealth of color information. During post-processing, our visual rendering software calculates the color representation by applying the spectral characteristics of cinema projection, based on measurements taken at Lichtspiel / Kinemathek in Bern, Switzerland.

Customizable Illumination

Customers can choose the type of illumination characteristics they prefer for their final results. Carbon arc, tungsten, xenon? Or maybe several renderings with different projection lights? The choice is yours.

Skip the Hassle of Conventional Workflows

Conventional workflows involve a tedious, error-prone, and costly color grading process to match digitized colors to the analog source material. With Scan2Screen’s multispectral workflow, this step is entirely unnecessary, largely eliminating human intervention.

Future-Proof Your Scans

The stack of black-and-white images from the scan serves as a sustainable source material for future renderings. This adaptability means you can easily adjust to wider gamuts or different color spaces in future technologies, without needing to rescan the analog film which may have deteriorated or perished over time. The spectral characteristics of the multispectral illumination unit are measured and stored as metadata in a text file.

Ready for Restoration and Post-Processing

Once rendered, you can ingest the digital elements into any restoration or post-processing software for stabilization, retouching, and producing all necessary deliverables required for your specific digitization project.

Flexibility for Contemporary Tastes

If you prefer to adjust the color rendition to appeal to modern audiences, Scan2Screen’s multispectral scans provide an excellent starting point for doing so with any available color grading solution.
